Conneaut frosh advance
Conneaut and Shaker Heights earned spots in the winners'-bracket semifinals of the first Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament at Jefferson High School on Monday.


Conneaut had the tougher time, edging the host Jefferson squad, 46-39. Shaker Heights was a convincing 67-28 victor over Lakeside in the day's first game.

Tournament action shifts today to Harvey High School for more first-round play. Perry will play Riverside at 4:30 p.m., followed by Geneva and Harvey at 5:30 p.m.

The winners of Monday's games and today's games will be back at Jefferson on Wednesday with Conneaut and the winner of the Geneva-Harvey game playing at 5:30 p.m. in the main gymnasium and Shaker Heights and the winner of the Perry-Riverside game following there at 6:30 p.m.

Jefferson and the loser of the Geneva-Harvey game will play in Jefferson's auxiliary gym Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Lakeside and the loser of Riverside-Perry at 5:30 p.m.

  • Conneaut 46, Jefferson 39 — The Spartans were in double figures in three of four quarters, while the Falcons reached double digits in only two quarters. Conneaut broke out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter, saw the gap narrowed to 24-18 at halftime and to 29-26 after three quarters before pulling away. Nick Blood led Conneaut with 24 points, while Christian Williams had 11 and Joey Borgerding added seven. Jacob Hamilton and Jerel Lower each had 11 points for Jefferson, while three other players had four points each.
     

  • Shaker Heights 67, Lakeside 28 — The Raiders hit double figures in the first three quarters and the Dragons were limited to single digits in three quarters. Shaker Heights had the game in hand at halftime with a 29-18 lead. Deniro Laster led Shaker Heights with 11 points, while Tim Williams added 10 and Brandon Bates, Melran Leach and Jimmie Pope all hit for eight apiece. Devin Dioneff paced Lakeside with 10 points, while Sayvaughn Morgan added seven and Tyler George had five.
